Natural Medicine- The power of the Bee

Hello and welcome to the Wellness Ranch, located in the Southern Arizona desert at 4700  ft. elevation.

Our purpose here is to introduce you to products and services that you may not be familiar with, some new, and and others that have been around for awhile but possibly have been forgotten. There are so many benefits to be gained from the use of natural foods and remedies that sometime the details and knowledge of the value of these natural foods get lost. One such natural medicine we need to bring bring back from the past is ” Propolis “, a product from the bee hive that may be a timely remedy, considering the endless viral attacks we find ourselves experiencing these days. The following is a partial excerpt from ” The American Chiropractor, February 1979 ”

PROPOLIS – NATURAL MEDICINE FROM THE BEEHIVE                                                                                                           A major breakthrough in the quest for an all natural medicine that will help battle the virus, soothe and heal stomach ulcers, create an antibiotic disease-fighting reaction within the body, even help control runaway cell breakdown which is symptomatic of cancer, has just been announced. Scientists from all over the world have discovered that a natural substance made by the bee may offer hope for speedy healing of a variety hitherto chronic ailments.

Known as propolis, this newly rediscovered beehive product ( it was known by the ancients but not until recently has it been used by modern scientists in the healing professions), is  a resinous substance, gathered by the bees, from the leaf buds or bark of trees (especially poplars ). The bees use propolis as a form of  “cement” that lines the walls of the hive in which they prepare honey, pollen, royal jelly and related products. The bees use propolis to  seal up any holes or cracks in the hive. Propolis is also used to fix the comb to the roof. It is a natural form of “cement” or “building material” that  offers the bees protection from outside contaminants while they remain in the hive.

Propolis is a natural product, collected by honeybees Apis  Mellifera, from various plant sources. Propolis is extensively used in foods and beverages because it improves human health. It contains more than 300 natural compounds such as polyphenols, phenolic aldyhydes, sequiterpene-quinones, coumarins, amino acids, steroids and inorganic compounds. Propolis exhibits a broad spectrum of biological and pharmacological properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory,immunomodulatory, antitumor, anticancer, antiulcer, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective actions. The chemical composition and beneficial properties of propolis vary greatly depending on the phytogeographical areas, seasonal collection time, and botanical source. Polyphenols found in fruits and vegetables are beginning to receive increased attention due to their vital role in protecting neural cells from oxidative stress and neuroinflammation associated with normal aging and chronic age-related diseases. Propolis is one of the most abundant sources of polyphenols (mainly flavonoids and phenolic acids). This overview is an attempt to discuss the molecular mechanism underlying the potential beneficial effects of propolis on human health and neurological diseases.
